Guy Kawasaki - The Art of Innovation in Utah

Guy Kawasaki came to Utah a few weeks ago, at the invitation of Doba CEO Jeremy Hanks.  He gave a very nice speech on the Art of Innovation.  A similar speech that he gave is posted on Zentation and I've included it below, or you can visit www.zentation.com/artofinnovation.   It's worth the time to watch (and he is a funny guy in person

His key points on Innovation (for startups and every other business, IMO) are:

1. Make Meaning
2. Make Mantra
3. Jump to the next curve
4. Role the DICEE (Deep, Intelligent, Complete, Elegant, Emotive)
5. Don't Worry, Be Crappy (at least the first time out!)
6. Polarize People (for a brilliant description of this process, read Bob Lutz' book Guts about the car industry)
7. Let a hundred flowers blossom
8. Churn, Baby, Churn
9. Niche Thyself
10.Follow the 10/20/30 Rule (10 Slides, 20 Minutes, 30 point font)
11.Don't let the bozos grind you down (Including Guy himself who said "It's too far to drive and I don't see how it can be a business - when invited to be considered as CEO of Yahoo!)

My favorite idea was that every great company should have a two or three word mantra that really describes the heart of what they do (which is different than their external marketing).  Of course if you don't already make meaning, it's hard to make mantra!  For example

Nike - Authentic Athletic Performance
FedEx - Peace of Mind.

What's YOUR Mantra? Can you describe the essence of what you do and who you are as a company in 2-3 words?  It's great discipline.
