A few thoughts on the importance of your website. In today's world you must have a website, and it becomes the embodiment of your brand and your company to the world.
- Have a professionally designed website, but be able to
maintain and upgrade it yourself
- Don't get locked into a situation where you get to pay every time you need to make a change
- Get good at SEO marketing - the search engines love "primacy" and staking early space in the market development. Remember that SEO marketing is much cheaper than paid advertising
- Keep the news flow fresh on your website, people will gage your progress at least in part by the content and freshness of the news on your site
- Work your PR strategy into your website strategy
- Contemplate Web 2.0 features such as blogging and mashups WHEN and only WHEN it helps your business purpose (don't get lost in "cool" if it makes it hard for your customer to get to a sale!)
- Never share a domain name that points to the hosting company, at least put up a "coming soon" page!
