Matt Asay's Connect column says Utah's entrepreneurial vision is small

In his October column, Matt Asay  Location Matters, Matt Asay takes a dim look at Utah's entrepreneurial prospects.  In particular he says "The ideas behind most Utah companies are small, offering little innovation and even less risk. I’m not sure as to the reasons, but a day spent in Silicon Valley and another spent in Utah reveals a huge ambition chasm that Utah seems disinterested in crossing."

Here is an excerpt from the email I sent Matt on this:
"Matt:
You're last column in Connect made me sad.  Have you really given up on Utah as a place that can have a thriving economy and can actually train our own talent?  I wonder why the vision/concept is smaller here - I personally believe Capital has a role in that - it's been so hard to get for so long... that I think it is hard to think "really big". The question is, as new capital comes into the state, will that change? "

The rest of the question is - if our vision is smaller  (and I agree that "sometimes" it is smaller here) why?  Are we not collaborating enough with the folks at the universities?  Our State Science Advisor is preparing a scorecard - and compared to many other states, we look good on Federally funded research.  But clearly, Utah's business community doesn't interact a lot with our university communities.  Why?  Why not?
