Computerworld's Feb 13, 2006 issue had a great set of articles on Mavericks inside of technology organizations.  It is very good reading and essential for entrepreneurs in the technology industry!

A nice summary of how to spot a maverick (so you know to start managing accordingly) is in Sidebar: Spotting a Maverick also  by Mary K. Pratt

This little sidebar has some great traits for recognizing Mavericks when they cross your path from Paul J.H. Shoemaker.

"They were right in the past when everyone else was wrong"
(Amen to that!  Make sure you recognize those who were right and be willing to say "YOU WERE RIGHT", and then LISTEN to them next time!)

"They are independent-minded"
Many managers take this as "difficult" or "not a team player".  On the contrary, mavericks are often more devoted to the success of the team, over their own success, than anyone else, which is why they are compelled to speak up when they think you are doing something stupid- no matter what the personal cost! LISTEN TO THEM!
