The "junior high” theory of investing

l

I had an interaction with a young entrepreneur who thought he'd been "dissed" when someone didn't return his phone call (but did return his emails).  He was very insulted and chose to walk away from an experienced person who was interested in helping and mentoring him.  What follows is some advice to new entrepreneurs about insults (and how VC firms attempt to avoid direct insults by delivering what I think is the ultimate insult).

  • Be Patient in the face of insults - there will be a lot of them

  • I was told early in my capital search by a newly minted VC (and former entrepreneur) that a venture capitalist will rarely tell you no – you may have something (a deal) that they want later and they will want in on that - so they don't want to "directly" insult you by telling you no.
  • I call it the "junior high” theory of investing – if I ignore you long enough, you’ll know I don’t like you
If  an investor is ignoring you, MOVE ON!  An investor, particularly a venture capitalist, will always always always  make time for a deal they want.

But don't take any insult personally!  If you internalize, and become emotional, over every real or percieved slight, you'll a) fail and b) go crazy.
